The Laughing Cow cheese is quite popular in the Middle East because it does not contains any animal rennet and therefore is considered halaal (allowed) by Islamic standards.

In Morocco, where I come from, this particular cheese is part of our day-to-day diet. I vividly remember from my childhood, my favourite breakfast being two triangular pieces of cheese along with fresh crispy Moroccan brown-bread bought from the bakers early in the morning before going to school. Till this day, the cheese still remains a popular product amongst Moroccans and in other Arab countries.

The product is localized by name nearly everywhere it’s sold. Depending on where one is, it is known as:

  • Al-Baqara Al-Dahika البقرة الضاحكة in Arabic-speaking countries
  • The Laughing Cow in English-speaking countries
  • Die lachende Kuh in German-speaking countries
